Coffee Milkshake 1: Potbelly Sandwich Shop

Potbelly Sandwich Shop is one of my favourite places to grab a sandwich when I'm in the DC area; good food, fresh, toasty warm, lots of flavour. One of the few places that puts a noticeable amount of hot pepper on the sandwich when hot pepper is what you ask for. Good chili too. But I had never had one of their much-marketed shakes, so no better time than now to rectify that.

Shake Summary
Very good shake, but unfortunately not a very good coffee shake. Like everything else Potbelly's serves their shake is well made and is made with good ingredients. Hand dipped and hand blended which results in the slightly random mix that the true shake lover expects. But their coffee ice-cream (I'll try to find out what kind they use later today) is weak, as if it were made with coffee loaded up with cream and sugar. This results in a darn good vanilla shake with just a hint of coffee flavour - tasty, but not the taste I am looking for.

16 ounces for $2.69.

Still hunting.

PS. Of course it is possible to make a great coffee shake with weak coffee ice cream, or even with vanilla ice cream, but you have to add COFFEE to it! Strong coffee. And a bit of chocolate syrup.

The best coffee milkshake in the world...

...or at least in the DC metro area, that's what I've decided to go in search of during any down time I may have whilst I am here, having been called away on other business.

Sure, it's literally freezing outside, but fortunately I don't plan to partake of them outside. I plan to be sitting inside various cozy and warm establishments in and around my nation's capital, feet to the fire (or radiator), debating the relative merits of coffee ice cream versus vanilla, varieties of chocolate syrup, and just how many shots of espresso are too many.

The primary factor, far outweighing any others, is taste, but I will also take into consideration (or at least mention) the return on investment (ROI) and the character of the place in which is was prepared.

So if you happen to know of any great coffee shakes in the DC metropolitan area, drop me a line. Can't guarantee I'll be able to check them all out (I actually do have real business to transact), but I'll do my best.

More reports, along with other miscellaneous travel stuff, as the situation develops.
